Thank you for your interest in joining Hamilton Artists Inc.’s Board of Directors!

The Board consists of Members who possess a variety of skills, knowledge, perspectives and talents. The Inc. is committed to equity and inclusion at all levels of the organization and programming. We encourage applications from individuals with a range of backgrounds and life experiences. As an artist-run centre, the majority of our Board members must be practicing artists or arts administrators.

Ideal candidates are practicing artists or people who have an interest in contemporary art and non-profit management. We welcome candidates who are community-minded and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. Any of the following will be considered an asset: experience in BIPOC organizations or related life experience, experience in LGBTQ+ organizations or related life experience, experience with disability advocacy or related life experience, fundraising and development, fiscal management, event management, marketing and communications or previous experience in non-profit culture. None of these experiences are mandatory – if you want to participate, we want to hear from you.

Board members must be members of the Inc. in good standing. Board members are volunteers and therefore cannot be financially compensated for their work, or exhibit at the Hamilton Artists Inc. while serving on the Board of Directors.

We welcome submissions from artists of all backgrounds (including but not limited to): Indigenous, Black, people of colour, refugees, newcomers, immigrants, Two-Spirit, LGBTQ+, gender non-binary persons, persons with disabilities, and those on low-incomes or living in poverty. Board of Directors are the champions of the organization. As a member of the Board, part of your commitment is to attend monthly board meetings and our Annual General Meeting. Your role will also include participating as a committee or executive member, assist in fundraisers, and to attend events/openings. How many hours a month can you contribute? *

Executive Role:
 
Co-Chair:
In order to distribute labour and leadership among the Board of Directors, and to remove unnecessary hierarchy in organization, the position of Chair has been split into a shared role. Co-Chairs should have strong leadership skills, human resources experience, and a background working in non-profit or arts organizations. Co-Chairs rule on internal questions or problems of the organization and act as a resource for staff.  Co-Chairs maintain a general overview of the organization, aspects of programming, operations, grant applications, political and community involvement, community activities and act as a representative and spokesperson for the organization.
Committee Roles:
 
Communications and Membership Outreach Committee Chair: The Communications and
Membership Outreach Chair should have a strong familiarity with communication practices, social
media, and graphic design skills. The Chair will lead the committee in connecting with Inc. members,
other organizations and the community at large. They will work closely with the Communications and
Outreach Coordinator on membership engagement, volunteer recruitment, managing and updating the
website, and facilitating the design and implementation of information packages and communication
tools for the Inc.
 
Development Committee Chair: The Development Committee Chair should have familiarity with
development and fundraising, specifically within the City of Hamilton. The Development Committee
Chair will lead the committee to generate income through sponsorships and giving programs that will
help the Inc. realize operational, project and other building capital projects. The Development
Committee Chair will work closely with the Executive Director to identify philanthropic friends and
patrons in order to generate income that guarantees the Inc.’s financial stability.
