WJEA 2025 OUTSTANDING JOURNALIST

Lu Flannery Memorial Scholarship: $2,000

About this award:  Washington's Outstanding Journalist Award honors Lu Flannery, WJEA's treasurer for many years. Before retiring in 1989, Lu taught journalism and advised the newspaper at Seattle's Lincoln High School. Lu's dedication and work ethic enabled her students and WJEA to grow and thrive. When she died at age 95, she remembered WJEA in her will with funding to support this scholarship in her name. The high school senior who is honored with the Lu Flannery Award and Scholarship of $2,000, demonstrates a strong work ethic and dedication to making the student media in their school the best it can be. This student is one who is respected by their peers and brings enthusiasm and a positive spirit to their work.
State level submission deadline:  Feb. 15, 2025
 
The online submission form below will ask applicants to upload the following materials:
  • a high school transcript or counselor's statement including journalism classes taken, grades and current GPA (PDF of 2MB or less) 
  • an action photo showing involvement in some aspect of student media (JPEG of 1 MB or less)
  • two to three letters of recommendation from those who know the applicant well (each as a PDF of 2MB or less)
  • essay of up to 500-words that: 1. is a personal narrative reflecting on the applicant's scholastic media experience and how it shaped both current success and future goals; 2. addresses challenges faced along the way and how these were solved; 3. exhibits a strong, vibrant voice. 
  • Link to a portfolio with samples of work produced during time working with student media.
