APPLICATION INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR 2020 GENERAL SOCIETY OF
MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS SCHOLARSHIPS
 
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
 
The General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) Scholarship Program is offering three scholarships in the amount of: $6000, $5000, $4000 and a $3,000 Mary Chilton Winslow Scholarship to graduating high school seniors who are Mayflower descendants and will be attending a four-year college or university or two-year community college.
 
In the spirit of the Mayflower settlers seeking to better themselves by moving to a new and uncharted world, special consideration will be given to applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to bettering themselves.
 
ANCESTRY REQUIREMENTS
 
For an applicant to be considered for a Mayflower Scholarship, the Application Form must include a valid active GSMD membership number for either the applicant or for a parent, grandparent, or great grandparent of the applicant. (Do not include State Society Numbers)
 
If any documentation needs to be submitted to GSMD to obtain a current GSMD membership number, applicants should begin work as early as possible with the Mayflower Historian in their state of residence to complete this process.
 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
 
Each Scholarship recipient must be a graduating high school senior; must provide the information requested for the application; and must enter a four-year college or university or two-year community college, the fall following graduation.

All applicants must take the SAT or ACT at a time that will allow the results to be submitted as a part of the scholarship application.
 
APPLICATION DEADLINE April 1, 2020
 
Each applicant must complete the application online and mailing required documentation by the deadline. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.
 
Items to be mailed: Grades, SAT/ACT Scores and Recommendation forms and letters recommendations postmarked by April 1, 2020.
 
Failure to send appropriate forms will eliminate your application from consideration.
 
APPLICATION PROCESS
 
1. Fill out application form online.
 
These are the instructions for completing and submitting your application. You will refer to it often as you prepare and collect your application materials for submission.
 
The last two pages of this document are forms for an Academic Recommendation and a Character Reference. Follow the instructions on each of these forms. Please ask your recommenders to fill out form, put in the sealed envelope which you will mail in one large envelope. Each of the forms is a required part of the application. Forms must be postmarked by April 1, 2020 or application will be disqualified.

2. Online Scholarship Application.
 
The Submission online form allows you to type in (or “copy and paste”) answers to questions.
 
Section 1 is the Scholarship Application; Section 2 is the form for your Mayflower Scholarship Essay.
 
3. Before proceeding further, read the guidelines for preparing your Mayflower Scholarship Essay below and be sure to carefully follow the instructions.
 
Application Check List:
1) Fill-out online form and submit by April 1, 2020.

2) Download PDFs for Academic and Character Recommendation Forms, instruct the recommenders to place forms in sealed envelope with your name. You will mail sealed envelopes with your Academic Grades and ACT/SAT Scores in ONE ENvelope by April 1, 2020 to:

Online Application Form:
 
1) The electronic file contains your Scholarship Application and your Mayflower Scholarship Essay. This file must be submitted by April 1, 2020.
 
Mailed Files
 
1) A copy of your high school transcript, including the record of the first semester senior year (certified copy from your high school
 
2) A copy or printout of your official notification of ACT or SAT scores. NOTE: Your ACT or SAT score must include the national percentile information that is provided on your official notification, which is included on your notification. Handwritten scores added to the transcript are not acceptable.
 
3) A sealed envelope containing one completed Academic Recommendation form, along with a separate typed letter if one has been prepared.
 
4) A sealed enveloped containing one completed Character Reference form, along with a separate typed letter if one has been prepared.
 
The above documents are required to be mailed, and must be paper clipped together in the envelope. Refrain from using staples, presentation folders, binders, portfolios or sheet protectors. Do not submit any other supporting documents.
 
IMPORTANT NOTE ON ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
 
Copies of documents to officially establish your direct lineage to the relative you named as an active member of the GSMD are NOT to be submitted as part of the application packet. However, scholarship winners must provide the necessary documentation to establish lineage when asked to do so.
 
DEADLINE: April 1, 2020. Materials must be postmarked by that date. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.
 
NOTIFICATION: After awards have been finalized, scholarship recipients will receive a formal notification letter on or about July 1, 2020.
 
At the same time, all other applicants will receive an email informing them they have not been
chosen for an award.
 
DISBURSEMENT: Scholarship recipients receive one-half of the funds for the first semester or quarter, the other half for the second semester or quarter.
 
Recipients are required to fill out a Scholarship Disbursement form for the first semester or quarter, and the second semester or quarter. Scholarship funds will be deposited in their tuition account or sent directly to them if there is a conflict with government grants. More detailed information will be provided in the formal notification.

Section 2: MAYFLOWER ESSAY
 
By far the most important portion of your application is the completion of a thoughtful, well-written essay exploring some aspect of the history of the Mayflower experience and its significance today. You are to write this essay in your own words. It is not intended to be a research essay, but rather a personal essay, exploring facets of your
Mayflower heritage. DO NOT incorporate text from any secondary sources in your essay. Essays that include text copied directly from suggested sources, or any other sources, will be disqualified.
 
INSTRUCTIONS FOR WRITING YOUR ESSAY
 
2020 is the 400 Year Anniversary of the Mayflower Crossing. It is also the 400 Year Anniversary of the Mayflower Compact. The focus of this essay will be on the Mayflower Compact.
 
Here is the text of the Mayflower Compact.
 
In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James, by the Grace of God, of England, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly
and mutually in the Presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the General good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.
